Ellen Sugg

Ellen Frances Duke Sugg peacefully left the bounds of this earth on November 9, 2012. She was the daughter of the late Minnie Bunkley Duke and Richard Pinson Duke, from whom she learned the deep values of family, church, and graciousness. A lifelong resident of West Point, Mississippi she was born October 5, 1912 where she lived most of her life in her family home on Main Street. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband William Ralph Sugg, sister, Suzanne Duke Calvert, and one grandson, William Thomas Person. She will be greatly missed by the family she cherished including daughters Ellen Sugg Ward and Elizabeth (Betty) Sugg Person (Mike), and son William Ralph Sugg, Jr. (Shurley), along with grand children, Thomas Shannon Ward (Jen Zimmer), William R. Sugg, III (Elvita), Gregory White Sugg (Jessi), Katherine Person Bronson (Adam), Jon Michael Person, Anne Peyton Sugg, and great-grandson Andersson Keene Bronson. Other survivors are her niece Suzanne Calvert and nephew Robert L. Calvert (Carolyn) and their families: Lee Traweek, John Traweek, Beth Calvert, Robert Calvert, Anita Calvert Keyes, Tommy Keyes, and Miller Keyes. She graduated from West Point High School in 1929 along with an accelerated class that completed high school in three years. She attended Mississippi State College for Women and graduated from Randolph Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia. She was a member of the Sigma Chapter of Chi Omega sorority. Ellen was known for her genuine warmth and sincerity that shone in her many roles in life…..daughter, sister, niece, cousin, wife, mother, "Gran/Dandy", Girl Scout leader, altar guild chair, teacher, volunteer, genealogist, friend, neighbor, gardener, artist, decorator, homemaker, and a lady in the finest sense of the word. She was a member of the Horseshoe Robinson chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Episcopal Church Women, Friends of the Bryan Library, and the Junior Auxillary, the West Point Garden Club. Genealogy became her passion in later life, allowing her to honor her mother's lineage in Alabama and her father's heritage from Pontotoc and Memphis, tracing both back to their roots in England. The family expresses gratitude to our mother's devoted caregivers Willie Bell Cox, Liz Butler, Maggie Pernell, and Elaine Tiffin, and to special friends Sarah Roberts, Susan Chandler, Eleanor Dalton, Esther Pippen and Lynn Tubb who filled her days with frequent visits, the "local news", and "friendship bread". Funeral services will be at the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation on Monday, November 12 at 11:00 am with internment following at Greenwood cemetery. The family will receive visitors Sunday at her home at 744 E Main St. from 3:00-5:00 pm. Pallbearers are Thomas Ward, Kate Bronson, Jon Michael Person, Bill Sugg III, Gregory Sugg, Anne Peyton Sugg, and Beth Calvert.
