Dorothy Jayn Hathorn Duncan passed away on Thursday June 2, 2022 surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer. Jayn was born on June 27, 1963 in Louisville, MS to the late Dorothy Sinclair Mitchell and James M “Jimmy” Hathorn, Sr.
Jayn graduated from Winston Academy in Louisville, MS and East Central Community College in Decatur, MS. She also attended Mississippi State University where she studied floral design. Jayn worked for over 30 years at Flowers by Shirley creating beautiful floral arrangements, helping brides plan weddings, designing casket pieces, and decorating homes and churches in West Point and the surrounding areas. Jayn did all this work with such a caring and sweet spirit. Her infectious laugh was a joy to hear. After Flowers by Shirley closed, Jayn worked for Renasant Bank as a teller and loved her new adventure and co-workers and the customers.
In 1994, she married Maurice Duncan and they had one daughter Kayla who last November married Casey Sexton. This wedding was Jayn’s last one to plan and decorate. It was a beautiful and special time.
Jayn was a member of West End Baptist Church. She had a great love for the Lord and her family and enjoyed spending time with them. She always picked the perfect card to send on every occasion. Her family called her Nan or ‘Nanny Goat”-a name given to her by her granddaddy Hathorn because as a little girl she ate paper.
Jayn is survived by her husband, Maurice Duncan; her daughter, Kayla Sexton (Casey); her sister Susan Hathorn (Doug Crutchfield); her step mother Dee Hathorn; step father, Jack Mitchell; her step brother, David Mitchell (Dee); step sister, Jennifer Higgason (Alan); several aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, James M. ‘Jimbo” Hathorn, Jr.; her maternal grandparents, Verna and Alex Sinclair; and her paternal grandparents, Dollie and J. Hoy Hathorn.
