Susan Rodgers

 Susan Elizabeth Rodgers, 69, of Birmingham, AL passed away on Dec. 1, 2023.

She was born on Oct. 1, 1954 in West Point, MS to the late Sam O’Brian and Irene Vernon O’Brian. After graduating from West Point High School and spending formative years in West Point, MS, she settled in Birmingham, AL where she spent the next 42 years raising a family, working in dental, legal and research-related professions, and enjoying her early “golden years.”

Susan loved nature and history. She spent many hours watching birds nest in one of several bird houses placed in her garden of carefully organized tulips, irises and lilies. Susan was an avid reader and poured over books about our nation’s founding fathers and Colonial America. She enjoyed traveling locally and abroad in recent years with her high school sweetheart, Charles Rodgers, to visit sites of historical prominence such as Jamestown, VA, and Normandy and Paris, France. She also loved visiting the Alaskan wilderness and whale-watching adventures.

Susan loved dogs and learning about K9 behavior. She served as an American Kennel Club-certified Evaluator and competed in several dog agility competitions with a beloved pet whom Susan proudly trained. She eagerly awaited the National Dog Show, a favorite pastime which she enjoyed watching with family each year at Thanksgiving. Susan was a loving wife and mother and devout Christian who treasured daily devotion time. She strived to follow God’s word and live a Christ-centered life.

She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Charles Rodgers; daughter, Amy Mackintosh of Statesboro, GA; son, Joel Rodgers of Birmingham, AL; sister, Diane Brand of Gulf Breeze, FL; and five grandchildren, Mary Katherine Henley, Lily Kate Rodgers, and Anna Marie, Victoria Elizabeth and Thaddeus Gabriel Mackintosh. A special thank you to numerous family and friends in MS, AL, GA, FL and NC that provided compassionate support and guidance during this unexpected and difficult time.

A funeral service will be 3:30 PM Tuesday December 5, 2023 at Robinson Funeral Home in West Point, MS with Pastor Jay Jackson officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Greenwood Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Robbie Robinson, Charlie Johnson, Art Shirley, Will Shirley, Drew Shirley, Thad Mackintosh. Visitation will be 2:30 to 3:30 PM Tuesday at Robinson Funeral Home.

A memorial service and visitation will also be held at 10 AM Wednesday December 6, 2023 at McCalla Bible Church in McCalla, AL (5860 Old Tuscaloosa Hwy, McCalla, AL 35111).
