Walter Daniel Fleishhacker, 85, passed away Sunday morning, February 17, 2019. He was born January 27, 1934 in Munich, Germany to Clara and Siegfried Fleishhacker. The family came to America in 1939 on the last boat leaving Nazi Germany where the ship was allowed to leave International waters without inspection. They landed in Springfield, IL where the town adopted them until they moved to Chicago and finally settling in Yonkers, NY. Walter played football for Yonkers High School and worked afternoons at Julian's Men’s Shop.
After a year at NYU, Walt, as he was known in those days, transferred to Ohio University in Athens, Ohio where he graduated in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army in San Juan and Ponce, Puerto Ricco. Returning to Athens, he used the GI Bill to earn his MBA in 1959 from OU. His first job out of college was with Corning Glass in Corning, NY where he worked to develop resistors used in the first space shuttle. He continued with Corning Box in Bradford, PA, before moving to Tupelo in 1964 with Daybrite Lighting. While working for Super Sagless, he was instrumental in designing motion chairs before opening Northeast Metal Processors in 1974 in Plantersville, MS. Northeast Metal Processors was the first paved scrap yard south of the Mason Dixon Line.
Walter drew great joy from donating to many projects including the town of Plantersville, where a street is named in his honor. As a member of Temple B’nai Israel Tupelo for 54 years, he left his mark in many ways including the creation of the Stein-Perler Jewish Library. He was also a supporter of, St. Jude, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and International Fellowship of Jews and Christians. He was very interested and supportive in an initiative on learning called "Autodidactic" defined as “self-taught masters”.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents Clara and Siegfried Fleishhacker, 3 infant children Aaron, Jean and Eric and his beloved dog Eanie.
Survivors include his daughter Barbara, brother Harvey, nephews Elliot (Lori) and Dr. Jordon (Joy) Fleishhacker, long time employees Regina Todd and her family, Joe Ford and Larry Burt, neighbors and cronies at Old Waverly Golf Club and the countless young people who have benefited from his tutelage.
Memorial service will be held at 2pm Friday, February 22, 2019 at Temple B'nai Israel, 1301 Marshall Street, Tupelo, MS. In keeping with the Jewish faith, the family asks that in lieu of flower, a donations be made to Temple B'nai Israel or a charity of your choice in Walter’s memory.
Interment will be at Gutterman's Funeral Home in Rockville Centre, NY.
